Karol Kwiatek - PhD researcher at the University of Plymouth

I am a final year PhD student at the University of Plymouth.

The objective of this research project is to find a new and compelling method for telling stories and narratives that are presented via the use of an interactive panorama that encompass the use of communication technologies and virtual reality. The final goal of the project is to build on the tradition of touring panoramas and to create a new form of demountable immersive digital 'gallery space' or 'virtual arena' that is suitable for a broad spectrum of audio-visual material and other creative content.

I have studied the history of Plymouth to enable the telling of historical narratives. Then I started visualising and reconstructing sites in Plymouth which could be used to locate the narrative using 3D models of those locations. Aerial image of Charles Church is situated in the middle of the busy roundabout in Plymouth. [local.live.com]

This website presents only a small part of my research using the example of Charles Church in Plymouth.

The Charles Church was bombed during the Blitz in 1941 and it was not rebuilt after World War II. Today, it is situated in the middle of the busy roundabout. The building will not be rebuilt as it is the City's memorial to the civilians killed in the Blitz.

Special thanks to:

Rev. Roger Williams, from St. Matthias Church in Plymouth who looks after the ruined church and who opened the church for the purpose of taking panoramas in its interior.

Chris Robinson - the local historian, who helped in the realisation of the project and for the constructive advice.

Klaudiusz Wesolowski - a very creative student from Warsaw (Poland), who specialise in 3D modelling and he helped a lot in the research project.

Patricia Lux - the Heritage Officer of the Ford Park Cemetery Trust.

Joyce Brown - Local and Naval Studies Librarian from Plymouth City Library, who helped in finding historical images of Charles Church.
